As amateur radio operators, we often take for granted our ability to easily reach out to the far corners of the globe. A late evening QSO with Europe, while exhilarating, is by no means uncommon. We’ll regularly trade ‘fish stories’ about that crazy contact that we made on low power with a ramshackle antenna but rarely stop to think about just how strange a notion this would be to someone not familiar with our hobby. Double this effect for anyone not familiar with the principals of RF communication, and HF communication in particular.

How time does fly. It seems like just last week I made a post about my Field Day adventures in and around the Atlanta area. I explored the concept of Field Day as Amateur Radio’s open house and spending time with several different groups to learn what makes Field Day special for them. In truth, of course, it’s been a full 12 months and yet another Field Day is in the log. This year, I took Field Day on the road and spent the weekend with a marvelous group of young men and women up in the Boston, Massachusetts area.
N7IH Icom America Club Station – Revealed
As a result of our recent move to Kirkland, WA, we’ve been able to set up our club station, N7IH, with new transceivers, a new tower and new antennas. It’s been a blast to specify what’s needed and then make it happen.
In an aside, I’m afraid that it is often true that the “cobbler’s children have no shoes” meaning that the cobbler can’t find the time to make his children’s shoes. That can happen to any organization, like Icom, that is so focused on working with customers and delivering fantastic products that it doesn’t take the time to enjoy its own products. In this case, amateur radio equipment.
VHF Radios vs. Cell Phones on a Boat
Avid boaters and those who love to fish know never to go out on the water without their cell phones and a VHF Radio. But there is a big difference between how you use a cell phone, and how and when you use your VHF radio. Every year we hear more people at tradeshows and events say that they don’t need a VHF Radio because they have a cell phone. We would like to share with everyone what the Coast Guard and experts in the field know: this is not a smart or safe idea.
